Rivalry

In the boxing world their has been a huge rivalry between Mexican and Mexican American boxers and it is still going on today. For example just to name a few fights like Salvador Sanchez (Mexico) vs El Coloradito Lopez (USA) and the two legendary fights between Oscar de la Hoya (USA) vs Julio Cesar Chavez (Mexico). The reason why I chose the topic of Mexican and Mexican boxers is because in the work field Mexicans were taking away the jobs from the Mexican Americans since they were doing the work for cheap because they needed to feed their families. This wasn't just happening in the work field but also in boxing since Mexican fighters were and still are fighting for less money. What this causes is if a Mexican American boxer and a Mexican boxer both have a chance to fight for a world title and they have the same qualities as fighters the promoter is going to choose the fighter that will fight for the least amount of money. Which most of the time is the Mexican boxer. The fight that comes to mind is Sanchez vs Lopez since Sanchez was not a famous fighter while Lopez was very famous in the U.S specially in L.A which is where most Mexican Americans like him lived. Lopez lost the two fights that he had against Sanchez which made the tension that were going on between Mexicans and Mexican Americans worse during the 80's.

I really like how you have linked boxing to culture. I didn't know that Mexican boxers were paid less and that there were so many parallels to many issues within the united states. I will be interested to see the other topics you write about in the future.

Yeah, I wrote about the rivalry between the United States and Mexico in soccer matches. You kind of did the same thing by tying athletics into the idea of it affecting political situations. You did a really good job of linking the boxing situations to what we have talked about in class.

I think that it's kind of messed up that tensions arise alot of the time between the Mexican Americans and the Mexicans because they are from the same country. They should all want any descendent from Mexico to win, and yet they are divided because of the rivalries in the community. This is very interesting though how you connected the fighting in the ring with the fighting in the community.
